Placements - In Search of Alternatives
Placements remain the weakest link in almost all techno-managerial institutions. Since the admissions to a particular institution are driven & determined by the quantum and quality of placements accentuated, the make it or fake it regime reigns supreme.Excessive amount of efforts are made and investments are done by the colleges to make sure that they can land up a sizeable chunk of their students to coveted multi-national companies – a dream which drives the middle class Indian families to send their wards to techno-managerial education.
The excessive proliferation of techno-managerial education has worsened the placement scenario further. Even after the redressal of employability gaps, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to place all the techno-managers produced in mainstream companies. Since the global economic recession, especially in the US and Europe is not getting over, the mainstream companies which are dependent on these economies are finding it difficult to sustain their current man-power pools as well. This scenario is projected to get worse in times to come by some experts.
Under such circumstances, it would be imperative on the part of both the policy makers as well as the individual educational institutions to prepare their students for a mix of broad based careers. One of the biggest problems with the existing educational scenario is that it doesn’t equip the students to opt for self-employment. The societal moorings have become such that after opting for a B.Tech or an MBA programme one has to simply land up at a job only. The techno-managerial skill set acquired are not seen to be a value enhancer in the traditional family business which has been running for generations.
The techno-managerial institutions have a great role to play in order to survive themselves and also to empower the students and the society at large by unleashing the innate entrepreneurial spirit.
